Over 200 people took in the 70th anniversary celebrations of Nairn Centre’s sawmill yesterday. The original 19-person crew has grown to a team of 170 employees looking after forest management, woodlands operations and more, now under EACOM Timber Corporation. Vice President and C.O.O. Wade Zammit says the milestone underscores the hard work and commitment to sustainable practices that define EACOM and the forestry sector. He adds $12-million was recently invested in the sawmill to ensure operations for the long term. Sunday’s events held at the Nairn Community Centre included a barbecue, crafts for the children, writing letters for a time capsule and memorabilia displays.
In addition, Nairn & Hyman Township will mark its partnership with EACOM and the 70th anniversary of the sawmill with new signage. EACOM presented a legacy gift to the township to revamp the municipal entrance signs with artifact saws and landscaping marking the township’s lumber history. Township Mayor Laurier Falldien thanked the company and congratulated the staff and administration on assisting the municipality in sustaining the mill in Nairn.
