Three generations of Massey farming family highlight 4-H Ontario’s 60th

It’s not unusual to have multiple keynote speakers at a large event, but three from the same family representing three generations is unique.

The Emiry family of Massey was well represented at the 4-H Ontario’s 60th Anniversary Reunion for Provincial Leadership Camp.

All three attended the camp: Mack Emiry in 1959, Keith in 1987 and Logan in 2015.

The three officially welcomed the hundreds of graduates at the banquet held on August 17th at the University of Guelph.

Hundreds of youth have attended the camp over the last six decades including 10 Emiry family members.

Mack went on from PLC to share his leadership skills as Reeve, Ontario Federation of Agriculture Director, Ontario Soil and Crop Director, Junior Farmer Exchange Delegate, and Ontario Soil and Crop Provincial President as well as volunteering locally with organizations such as 4-H and the Massey Fair.

Provincial 4-H Leadership Camp is the flagship program for 4-H Ontario.

The family continues to run their dairy and other farming operations in the Sables-Spanish Rivers Township and Algoma District.

Successful for over 50 years, this program helps young people between the ages of 15 to 19 enhance their leadership, communication, goal-setting and team work skills, through hands-on activities.

Some of the activities include building a quinzee snow hut, leading a team across a raging river, or re-enacting the day as part of the fleet log.

Both as an individual and in teams, participants plan, run and evaluate parts of this six-day, five-night program – from social recreation to evening programs – all while having an experience of a lifetime.

The Massey 4-H Club has sent several members to camp including Heidi Meier of Massey who attended in 2019.

The anniversary celebration included an afternoon of games and activities and an evening banquet and dance.
