UPDATED 8:30AM – FRIDAY: Lester B Pearson Civic Centre partial roof collapse – no one hurt

There has been a partial collapse of the Lester B Pearson Civic Centre in Elliot Lake.

City CAO, Dan Gagnon, says part of the roof collapsed Thursday evening and fortunately, only one minor injury reported.

There was a rehearsal underway at the time, but few people in the building.

Gagnon adds the city is also taking precautions at other municipal venues.

Collins Hall, the pool and the arena are all closed today until they are inspected and snow and/or ice has been removed from the roofs.

Gagnon says the Civic Centre, which houses a 340-seat community theatre, mining museum and administration offices, will remain closed for the foreseeable future until the City’s Chief Building Official and engineers can assess the damage.

Still with the story, ELATE, the local theatre group in Elliot Lake, was to host the showing tonight and tomorrow of the play “Shorthanded” at the civic centre. With the partial collapse of the roof, the group is now looking for a new venue. Ticket holders are asked to keep their tickets and they will be notified through The Moose of the new venue.
