Council will review smoking bylaw

Espanola council is taking a serious look at amending the local bylaw in regards to smoking area.

Sacred Heart School council parent member, Melissa Bishop, told council Tuesday night that it is within its prevue to strengthen the smoking bylaw to exceed provincial legislation as many other councils have done.

She says they want three key changes: the elimination of smoking on public sidewalks and smoke free zones be increased to 25 metres at all schools, as well as public places, like recreation centres and parks.

Four students from the school also addressed council as to why smoking isn’t a good thing.

Espanola Mayor Jill Beer agreed to have the community services committee review the bylaw and consider the amendments suggested by the school council.
