Medical Officer of Health says flu vaccine does not cause the flu

Ontario’s Medical Officer of Health is dispelling a myth about the flu vaccine.

Doctor David Williams says it all has to do with what happens to a person after he or she gets inoculated.

Williams says some people believe they will contract the flu after getting their shots but he says this is not true and adds the vaccine is safe.

Williams also says to reduce spreading the risk of transmitting the flu virus, people should cover up when they cough or sneeze.

However, he says most don’t bother doing this.

Williams says people in this category can infect an unsuspecting group of others in the same room because the droplets can easily travel 10 feet across a room.

He says this means you can still be affected even though you may not be standing or sitting next to the person who is coughing or sneezing.

Williams says it’s still not too late to get a flu shot.

The vaccine is available from your doctor, a health unit or most pharmacies.
