The City of Elliot Lake will not be buying the Algo Mall property … for now.
A closed and public session of Elliot Lake council was held yesterday to discuss an offer to buy the Algo Mall for $950,000 plus costs, but a tie defeated the motion.
City CAO Dan Gagnon told The Moose councilor Luc Cyr had declared a conflict of interest, so he recused himself from the vote yesterday afternoon.
In a recorded vote, Mayor Dan Marchisella and councillors Ed Pearce and Tom Turner voted in favour of the offer and Sandy Finamore, Norman Mann and Chris Patrie, against.
Gagnon says with the tie, the motion was defeated, so the purchase of the mall will not be moving forward in the current scenario.
The Algo Mall garnered world-wide attention on June 23, 2012, when a segment of the rooftop parking deck collapsed into the building, crashing through the upper level to the ground floor below.
More than 20 people sustained non-life-threatening injuries and two people died in the collapse.
Gagnon did not say whether there would be more discussions on the matter.
