Pele Mountain has a way to reduce its start-up costs to mine rare earth elements in Elliot Lake. It wants to recycle phosphate minerals known as monazite. In this case the mineral would come from countries that are trading partners with Canada and the monazite would be high grade. Pele has been trying to open a uranium and rare earth mine in Elliot Lake and hopes it’s recycling project kick-starts the mining program. City council is on board with the project and has given the company its unanimous support.
