November is Shaken Baby Awareness Month

With November being Shaken Baby Awareness Month, newborns from the Espanola and North Shore area will receive a special gift.

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is teaming up with Health Sciences North to raise awareness about the Period of PURPLE Crying program to prevent shaking and abuse of infants.

The Period of PURPLE Crying is a time in an infant’s life when crying increases; beginning at about two weeks old, peaking in the second month and ending in the third to fifth month of life.

Throughout the month of November and December, all babies born at the birthing centre will receive a knit purple cap, as part of the campaign organized by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Parents will also receive teaching and education materials to help them understand the frustrating, but normal, features of prolonged crying that most infants go through.
