Passing of Andrew Manitowabi

Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald says on behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario, she offers their deepest condolences to the community of Wiikwemkoong and the family of Andrew Manitowabi.

Manitowabi was a decorated war veteran receiving the Defence Medal, Volunteer Medal, Italy Medal, France Medal, the England Medal, and most recently the Jubilee Medal.

Manitowabi opened the famous Andy’s in 1966 out of his home in Wiikwemkoong creating a business that would provide local goods to the community, as well as provide community members with employment.

He also advocated and initiated plans for the Wiikwemkoong Nursing Home, was a respected elder and served on council for a number of years.

He was laid to rest this past Friday.
