Elliot Lake – City uses legislation to clean up Algo Mall site

The City of Elliot Lake will use legislation to clean up the site of the Algo Mall.

Privately owned, the mall collapsed on June 23rd, 2012 where two people died and over 20 were injured.

City CAO Dan Gagnon says the city has begun actively pursuing all avenues to address the cleanliness and safety of the former Algo Mall property including using all municipal legislation they have in their power.

He says efforts have begun under a property standards order to remove an old, large piece of equipment that has been on site for some time and deemed a hazard.

Costs to clean up the site can be charged to the owner by the city.
Gagnon adds residents are asked to be patient while the removal is ongoing and to refrain from accessing the site for their own safety.
