Will Highway 69 continue to be four-laned under Tories

The future of continued work to four-lane Highway 69 is up in the air.

The uncertainty is the result of Premier Doug Ford’s election promise to review spending commitments by the former Liberal government and that includes future work on Highway 69.

The new transportation minister is being briefed on various roadway projects and the four-laning of Highway 69 is part of the briefing.

Since 2003 the Liberals have spent about $850-million to four lane the roadway that will eventually connect Sudbury to Toronto.

Originally, the plan called for the project to be completed by 2017.

However that was pushed to 2020 because of delays to acquire land, carry out environmental assessments and working out agreements with area First Nations.

What’s left is a 14 kilometre stretch of road surface from Alban to the CN Rail line.

Work on that section continues and once complete about $200-million is needed to complete the final 68 kilometres.
