The man involved in a shooting Sunday night in Sturgeon Falls is dead.
Monica Hudon, the Communications Manager of the Special Investigations Unit, confirmed to Moose News that the 46-year-old man died.
However the SIU doesn’t say if the man, whose name has not been released, died by his own hand or as a result of a shot or shots from the police.
The SIU says the man’s body was found at 2:06am Monday, in a wooded area about six hours after a woman called 9 1 1 to say shots had been fired on her property at Leblanc Road.
The SIU says the man suffered a gunshot wound.
Prior to the man’s death, when police first arrived at the Leblanc Road property the SIU says there was an interaction between them and the man but the agency doesn’t describe the nature of the interaction.
It was during this interaction that the man ran into a wooded area.
When news of the shooting first broke Sunday night, West Nipissing Police said the shooting involved two victims.
However no information has been released on the condition of the victims.
The SIU told the Moose that it can’t provide that information because its mandate is to investigate the interaction involving the 46-year-old and the police.
It says information about the victims police referred to in their release has to come from the police.
Moose News has reached out to West Nipissing Police Chief Ray St. Pierre for an update on the victims.
During the case the West Nipissing police got help from the OPP in North Bay and Orillia.
At one point the OPP closed Highway 17 between Leblanc Road and Drive In Road in both directions as they searched for the shooter.
Shortly after the man’s body was located, Chief St. Pierre issued a statement saying there were no public safety concerns although at the time no information had been released that the shooter was dead.
The SIU continues to investigate the case with five investigators and three forensic investigators.
The agency is also asking anyone with information about the case to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
In addition, the SIU is urging anyone who has video on the investigation to upload it to the SIU website.
