AMO around the corner – Northern leaders will express rail concerns

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s 2018 AMO Conference will host about 1,900 participants from hundreds of municipalities and organizations from across the province.

Discussions will include the upcoming municipal election, rural development and Indigenous relations.

Northern Ontario leaders will be looking for support from the provincial government in maintaining rail and/or adding rail services in the North.

Huron Central Railway has said it will discontinue the spur line between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, which would have a direct effect on Domtar, EACOM and Algoma Essar-Steel.

The conference will be held August 19 to 22 at the Shaw Centre and Westin in Ottawa.

AMO’s annual conference is Ontario’s top educational forum for municipal governments. This year, the program features more than 70 sessions and workshops reflecting the broad scope of municipal responsibilities.

Keynote presenters include:

Hon. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario

Hon. Steve Clark, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing

Andrea Horwath, Leader of the Ontario NDP and Official Opposition

John Fraser, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party

Mike Schreiner, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario

Nik Nanos, Founder/CEO, Nanos Research Corporation

Lynn Dollin, AMO President (finishing two-year term)

Incoming AMO President (to be announced)

The annual conference is a chance for municipal officials to work together to address shared challenges, to learn, and to create new opportunities. In addition to the conference program, municipal staff and officials will take part in over 300 delegation meetings with provincial and federal ministries. Provincial ministers will also take questions from municipal elected officials in an open forum.

Key session topics include cannabis legalization, trade, indigenous relations, climate change and disaster preparedness, waste diversion, ambulance dispatch, emerging technologies and Smart Cities, the 2018 municipal election, rural economic development, and much more.
