Microburst shuts down powwow – heavy rains and winds – four new forest fires in northeastern Ontario

The Wiikwemikoong Powwow was shut down early due to heavy rains and winds with people scrambling for safety and shutting down the event early.

The severe winds, some believe it was a micro-burst, late Sunday afternoon, tore apart tents and vendors displays, but there were no serious injuries.

Several community members are assisting in cleaning up the site, which is expected to take a few days and others opened up their homes to those who needed assistance and others
Meanwhile, the heavy rain scattered throughout the northeast helped the fire situation a bit, but travel advisories and evacuation alerts remain in place.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests say there are four new fires, likely started by lightning, bringing the total to 44, of which 19 are not under control.

Parry Sound Fire 33 is now over 11,000 kilometres and there new fire called Sudbury 101, some 16 kilometres outside St. Charles is also being observed.
