Forest fire triples in French River area – mandatory evacuations

If you can smell smoke in Elliot Lake and Espanola or Manitoulin Island, do not be surprised.

International help from Mexico and the United States and other provinces are on their way to fight the fire dubbed Parry Sound 33 that has spread so rapidly, it is over 5,000 square acres in size.

Residents in the Key River, French River and Pickerel River areas are under mandatory evacuation, as are people in the French River Provincial Park and Killarney Park area.

The smell of the fire has been sensed as far west as Sault Ste. Marie, but the air quality index is listed at ‘low risk’.

The MNR is currently dealing with at least 65 fires across the province, 34 of which remain out of control.
