Police will police paddleboarders

Stand-up paddleboards are more common today than they’ve ever been and the East Algoma OPP says there are certain requirements.

Community Safety Officer, Constable Phil Young, says paddleboards are not specifically referenced in regulations, but are treated the same as other human-powered pleasure craft, like canoes and kayaks.

Young says safety equipment is required including a lifejacket, 15 metres of buoyant heaving line, a whistle, navigation lights, if operated between sunset and sunrise and a magnetic compass when operated beyond sight of seamarks.
Static activities, such as stand-up paddleboard yoga, are exempted.
