SIU terminates Espanola Police Service investigation

The Special Investigations Unit has closed an investigation into a man’s claim that an Espanola Police Service officer injured him during his arrest earlier this year.

Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, says he terminated the investigation into the incident, which dates back to January 19th of this year because medical evidence proves the injury existed prior to his arrest.

It was reported the man was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by another man when an Espanola Police officer pulled him over.

When the officer became aware that the passenger had outstanding warrants, the man was arrested and taken to the police station.

The man later complained to his lawyer and the SIU was called in on March 26th.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
