Election creates history for Elliot Lake

Monday’s election produced a first for the new city council in Elliot Lake. For the first time ever, half of the six councillors are women. Elsewhere, voter turnout was high for a municipal election in Espanola and Spanish. Spanish saw 59 percent of eligible voters cast ballots while 57 percent of voters went to the polls in Espanola. That figure is a big turnaround for Espanola when only 27 percent of people voted in the 2010 campaign. And the lack of a mayor’s race probably contributed to a low turnout in Sables – Spanish Rivers where 33 percent of eligible people voted.
