Elliot Lake council reviewing Miner’s Memorial Wall criteria

Elliot Lake’s council will be reviewing the policy for determining how the names of injured miners are added to the city’s Memorial Wall.

Former miner Terry Whitehead and city resident Nicole Cook asked council for the consideration.

Whitehead told council the WSIB criteria, which was put in place by the selection committee in 2015, unfairly excludes former and deceased miners who should be immortalized on the Miners Memorial Wall.

While Council takes agreed to take another look at the selection process at the committee level, five new names will be added to the memorial as part of the Day of Mourning.

Paul-Joseph Drouin, Jean-Marie Marceau, Lucien Simon, Robert Earl McLean and Leo Paul Audette will be added to the Miners’ Memorial Wall this Saturday, April 28, at 11am.
