Final decision on OPP switch in Espanola up for discussion

Espanola council could make the final decision on whether to switch from municipal to provincial policing.

Council placed the OPP costing on the agenda for Tuesday night’s meeting to allow them the option of finalizing their decision on whether to eliminate the Espanola Police Service and switch to Ontario Provincial Police.

Last Thursday, about 20 or so people asked questions and expressed their viewpoint at the last public meeting on the issue.

Town CAO, Cynthia Townsend, told the Moose Monday morning most of the questions raised have now been answered and information not available at the public meeting has been provided.

Delegations will be allowed to speak for the final time at the meeting at 7:00 pm in council chambers, but they must notify the town they wish to do so by the end of the business day, 4:30pm Tuesday.

Council could also delay the decision if they so choose, since it has until May 22nd to sign the contract.

The meeting will be livestreamed and for the link, go to: espanola.ca … click on town hall, then on mayor and council, then on streamed meetings.
