Nuclear funding to go into reserves – Elliot Lake

It was a bittersweet gift of sorts.

The City of Elliot Lake officially received a $600,000 donation from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization and passed a bylaw to place it in a reserve fund to be used to benefit the community.

The city received the funds for its work over the last few years as part of the selection process for an underground nuclear waste storage location.

However, the city did not make the next stage in the process, so the donation was given as a way of saying thank you for the work done.

The bylaw stipulates it is to only be used for the purpose of supporting projects, programs or services that benefit the community such as, but not limited to, youth or seniors, community stability, energy efficiency, economic development and other initiatives considered community well-being.
