Elliot Lake landfill life running out/Improvements

Last fall, Elliot Lake city council received the findings of an inspection of the municipal landfill carried out by the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change in the summer.

A priority for Elliot Lake council in 2018 is the landfill.
The city’s landfill site has operated since 1982 and is expected to reach capacity this year.

The municipal landfill grows by approximately 6,700 tonnes of waste annually.
The ministry report states the city “could possibly divert another 33% of its waste” by means of a wider-ranging recycling and composting program.

Even with the waste diversion initiatives identified,” the report adds, “the city would exceed the landfill’s capacity near 2017 and be in violation of the landfill operating approvals.”

Still with the story, the ministry wants improvements in recycling and called for some immediate action on the water and sewer systems within the landfill zone.

Pinchin Limited has been hired to update the ground water and surface water monitoring system, and will also evaluate the leachate collection system.

Tulloch Engineering will review storm water management and assist the city to update its design and operations manuals.

The estimated cost for all of the work required is $22,800, which was not included in the 2017 budget.
