The Manitoulin Health Centre now houses hospice suites at both the Little Current and Mindemoya hospital sites.
Paula Fields, director of partnerships and innovation for the project, says hospice care has been made a provincial priority by the North East Local Health Integration Network, which provided the funding.
As an end of life suite, the rooms include a kitchenette, table and chairs, a pull out couch, private washroom and other amenities.
A smart television is also available for video conferencing so that patients can connect with their loved ones who aren’t able to be there in person.
The rooms also include special ventilation to allow for smudging, as well as medicines, an eagle feather and basins for cedar baths to meet the needs of First Nation patients.
