M’Chigeeng First Nation reinstates chief and council

The original results of a First Nation election held in the fall will stand.

In the fall, The Moose reported the results of the election in M’Chigeeng First Nation had been appealed.

An appeal filed with the community’s custom election code appeals committee over the version of a membership list used in the election led to the results of the September 9th election being overturned and a new one called for December 16.
However, a legal challenge by former Chief Linda Debassige (DAH-BAH-SKI) led to that election being put on hold following an October 29 meeting of the appeals committee.

After negotiations between the appeals committee and Debassige, a settlement was reached that would have seen new elections taking place on April 17, 2018.

But, following a December 18 public meeting with more than 150 community members, the appeals committee decided to reinstate the chief and band councillors as elected in the September election.
