New start for colleges in January

Colleges across Ontario, including Cambrian College, will be working with a new deal when staff returns to the classroom in January.

An arbitrator hammered out a deal between Ontario’s 24 colleges and the union representing faculty last week.

College faculty was forced back to work by the province last month, ending the longest strike in the history of Ontario’s colleges.

The deal gives full-time professors a return-to-work payout of 900 dollars, a 7-point-7-5 per cent raise over four years and outlines the need for academic freedom.

It is estimated up to 25,000 students dropped out of college due to the strike.

Cambrian College operates two satellite campuses; on in Little Current, the other in Espanola, besides its main campus in Sudbury.
