Elliot Lake Mayor disappointed – underground nuclear waste site

Elliot Lake’s mayor is disappointed that Elliot Lake has been removed from the list as a possible site for an underground depository for nuclear waste.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization announced Wednesday that Elliot Lake and Blind River were no longer on the list.

Mayor Dan Marchisella expressed his regret with the final decision, but added he is proud of the community for taking on the responsibility of being part of the ‘Learn More Process’ for the safe, long term storage for spent nuclear fuel.

For taking part in the process, Elliot Lake, Blind River and Sagamok-Anishnawbek First Nation will be eligible for community support funding up to $600,000, and Spanish and The North Shore, $300,000.
