Treaties Recognition Week: learning about Indigenous communities

The Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation had a taste of Northern Hospitality this week when he attended a book launch in Birch Island on Monday.

Minister David Zimmer and Grand Council Chief Patrick Madahbee launched Treaties Recognition Week.

The two met with Whitefish River First Nation Chief, Franklin Paibomsai and several children from the local school to launch two new books.

Zimmer was delighted by the children, even getting down on the floor to share some photo time.

“Today, there are more than 40 treaties and other land arrangements,” he says

“Everyone shares in the benefits and obligations of these treaties, yet many Ontarians have not had a chance to learn about how treaties continue to shape the places we call home.”

Both Paibomsai and Madahbee echoed his comments and welcomed the children and other visitors to the launch.
