No new election in M’Chigeeng

The band council re-election in M’Chigeeng originally slated for December 16 has been cancelled.

Members of the M’Chigeeng First Nation will not be going to the polls for a re-election in the immediate future.

Last month, The Moose reported that the results of the last election had been declared void because of irregularities in the membership voting list.

But, it announced last week that the new elections ordered by the band’s appeals committee were being placed on hold pending a legal challenge.

Committee chair, Isadora Bebamash, says the committee has retained legal counsel to get a better understanding of the legal language.

They’re hoping legal counsel can help them with that.

The September 9th band election results were overturned by the committee when it was determined the band list used in the election was not in sync with the official list put together under the band’s membership rules.

Also, a number of electors and candidates were ineligible to vote or run in the election under the band’s custom election code.

The hearing of the notice of motion is scheduled in Toronto for November 7.
