The English Catholic church in Elliot Lake will be staying open, but the French church will be closed.
The French Catholic church, Paroisse Ste. Marie, will close and the English Our Lady of Fatima remain open.
More than 200 parishioners met with Bishop Marcel Damphousse last week to hear the decision on which church would be closing its doors.
Damphousse said Our Lady of Fatima Church, which is smaller and more economical to sustain, will serve as the place of worship for all the Catholics of Elliot Lake.
The decision to close Paroisse Ste. Marie Church stemmed from multiple factors: diminishing numbers of parishioners, loss of revenue and increased operating costs.
The closure and move, Damphousse said, will most likely take effect February 14th, 2018, in time for Lent.
A committee of six members, three from each church, will be selected to help finalize a decision as to how to proceed with the merger.
