Elliot Lake Mayor suggest move to buy Algo Mall property

Elliot Lake Mayor Dan Marchisella’s move to suggest that the former Algo Mall be purchased by the city did not sit too well with councilors last night.

Elliot Lake councilors were shocked and angry when Marchisella put a motion on the floor to purchase 151 Ontario Avenue, the site of the former Algo Mall, with a one-time non-negotiable offer of $600,000 immediately and that the offer is to be accepted or rejected within five days.

Marchisella emphasized it had good economic potential for the community and the city had to move forward from the tragedy, and that it would not necessarily be used for a new multi-use hub, but would be a good investment for the city.

The former Algo Mall roof collapsed in June 2012 and two women died as a result.

The property is considered an eyesore and a horrible reminder of the tragedy ever since.

The rest of council, with the exception of Councillor Luc Cyr, stated they were not pleased.

Councillor Connie Nykaforak questioned whether the Mayor had breached protocol by putting the motion on the floor.

New councilor, Ed Pearce, concurred saying the ongoing discussions about sites for the hub have been handled poorly and should have been in camera.

Councillor Tammy Van Roon said under no circumstances would she discuss it in an open forum.

Van Roon moved a motion to have the matter discussed in camera, seconded by Pierce effectively ending the public discussion, effectively cutting off any further public discussion on the matter.

Cyr made no comment on the matter.
