Elliot Lake council eliminates Centennial Arena as primary hub site

Elliot Lake council is no longer considering Centennial Arena as the primary site for a new multi-use hub facility.

Councillor Tammy Van Roon says council has been spinning its wheels for a while in regards to choosing a site for the facility.

She points out that the city can’t pursue funding without a final shovel ready site.

Council had chosen the arena as their primary site, but learned just over a month ago that an adjacent property, which formerly housed a gas station, had contamination issues and rehabilitation dating back to as recently as 2001.

But, there are still concerns there could be environmental issues depending on the size of the footprint of the proposed hub.

Mayor Dan Marchisella agreed saying there are multiple sites available.

Council then passed a motion eliminating Centennial Arena as its primary site.

However, it was pointed out that does not mean it does not remain on the short-list for consideration.

And, still with the story, staff indicated that they had searched the records in regards to cleaning up the site of the contamination, but no clearance certificate was found in the files.

Councillor Connie Nykaforak says there should be an environmental assessment carried out to make sure the site is rehabilitated and is not affecting the arena property.

The review will fall under the 2018 budget since there will be costs likely incurred to carry out the investigation.
