Strategies for economic growth discussed in Massey

Some residents of Sables-Spanish Rivers Township had a lively discussion in regards to economic development for the township.

The session held last Thursday at the Massey Arena was moderated by LAMBAC.

About 30 residents met to discuss the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for the township.

Former councilor and concerned citizen, Jayson Stewart told the Moose some of the strengths shared was the resiliency and community spirit of local businesses, the volunteer base, the number of new residential buildings, the natural environment, and the museum, arena and libraries.

Stewart says the loss Webbwood Public School and the Royal Bank and the near loss of the Walford Post Office also came up.

Some of the suggestions included branding the amalgamated community, more involvement in committees and council business, and overall community communication and promotion.

Stewart added the lack of a grocery store, market value senior housing, various opportunities for youth and lack of programs to promote beautification of business fronts were also identified as opportunities.

Lambac staff will now put all the suggestions into a document and then help the township form focus groups to refine an economic development plan with a strong positive focus.
