Elliot Lake council is being asked to consider introducing pickle ball in the community. The sport is a scaled down version of tennis except that the racket is solid and a larger ball is used. Mayor Dan Marchisella believes the sport has a lot of benefits and could be a game changer for the community adding it could also open the doors to sports tourism activities. However not all councillors are convinced pickle ball is a good fit. Connie Nykyforak opposes bringing the sport to Elliot Lake for cost and demographic reasons. Nykyforak doesn’t want City Hall involved in the proposal and prefers instead getting the tennis club involved as a partner. An American wants to bring pickle ball to town and would fund the facility to house the sport but also wants a return on his investment. Possibilities include adding pickle ball to the proposed multi-use complex or erect a stand-alone building to house the activity.
