First Nation people might one day have access to a vaccine to fight off a certain type of flu that hits Indigenous people more than others. For years Doctor Marina Ulanova, who is a researcher and professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, has studied why First Nation people are more vulnerable to the Type A Hia flu. To help her research along, the Canadian Immunization Research Network has given Ulanova a two-year grant totalling nearly $425,000. Ulanova and her team along with other researchers have been working on a vaccine to prevent the Hia flu. The vaccine is nearing the final development stages at the National Research Council in Ottawa.
