Espanola mayor Mike Lehoux will be ending his tenure as mayor on a high note. The town has reached a tax agreement on how the Domtar operations are assessed. Several years ago the operations were re-assessed which resulted in less taxes coming to the municipality. At the time Lehoux said local taxpayers would have to shoulder the difference if something wasn’t worked out. Lehoux says the agreement stabilizes taxation in town while pulp and paper mill general manager Scott Mosher says the deal ensures a sustainable mill operation.
