Espanola man convicted of arson loses appeal

A judge has ruled against an appeal by a contractor convicted of burning his own building in Espanola.

The Sudbury Star reports, in 2012, David MacIsaac is said to have set fire to a two-storey building in Espanola in order to collect from insurance.

Last march, MacIsaac was sentenced to two years in jail, which he appealed claiming there were several errors by the judge during the trial. MacIsaac has argued the trial judge excluded some pieces of relevant evidence and took some of his statements as a sign of guilt.

In the end, the appeal judge said the proper standards were applied in finding McIsaac guilty of arson.
