The deer hunt starts today on Manitoulin. Between now and Sunday, the Island is expected to see about 5,000 hunters and that’s prompted a message from the OPP. Manitoulin Island OPP are asking everyone to put safety first. That means keep the safety lock on until you’re ready to shoot and always point your rifle in a safe direction. On the Island, you need a landowner’s hand written permission to hunt on private land. Detachment commander Staff Sergeant Kevin Webb says his people will also be working with Conservation Officers with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry to ensure hunters are following the rules. Those rules include wearing hunter orange and hunting during appropriate hours. Webb says in addition, police will carry out roadside checks looking for impaired drivers or hunters.
