NDP looking for more safety inspectors in the north as part of today’s National Day of Mourning

Today marks the National Day of Mourning, to honour those killed or injured in the workplace. Northern Ontario New Democrats are taking the opportunity to demand more health and safety inspectors. Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says there are only two federal inspectors for the entire north, which he calls absolutely unacceptable. He says the inspectors are there for a reason; to make sure citizens are safe, and workers come home at the end of the day.

When you cut health and safety inspectors, Angus says you’re putting people at risk. He says it’s the same thing as when food and rail inspectors were cut. The NDP is sending an open letter to the House of Commons asking for this problem to be fixed.

There is going to be an event in Timmins this morning to recognize the National Day of Mourning. It’s happening at the Miner’s Memorial Park, behind the Mac, at 11:00am.
