Schools could reopen this week

Espanola High School and Manitoulin Secondary School remain closed due to a teacher’s strike, but not for long.

The Minister of Education has announced that the government will be tabling back-to-work legislation to end the secondary teachers’ strike in Rainbow District School Board and get students back to school.
This process will take a few days and Rainbow secondary schools remain closed until further notice.

“We are working to determine what the remainder of the school year will look like, including final marks, missed work and exams,” said Board Chair Doreen Dewar. “We will continue to support students and families to ensure a smooth transition.”
She added: “We will inform students and families as soon as we have more information about when our secondary schools will re-open.”

It’s believed the process will take two to three days, so schools could reopen as early as this Friday.
There are about 45 teachers on strike at Espanola High, about the same for Manitoulin Secondary.
