Ontario government steps up programs over First Nation youth suicides

The provincial government has announced new initiatives to deal with suicides among First Nation young people.  They include sending more mental health counsellors to remote First Nation to help the community meet the suicide crisis.  The province also wants First Nation students to feel safer when attending schools far from their community.  So it’s developing programs that include partners to help ensure student safety.  One component involves creating alternatives where students can be educated closer to home.  Some reports say Indigenous students who leave home for a distant school have been the object of racism and violence.
