The East Algoma OPP are trying to prevent a problem the detachment ran into last year with bears. The various offices got 346 bear complaints in their coverage area. That used up valuable resources where police responded to calls that are normally handled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The OPP say the MNRF’s toll free number is 1-866-514-2327. The OPP will only intervene in a bear situation when they have no choice but to shoot it because it’s a threat to people.
